THE NASH RAMBLER : A BED ON WHEELS . . .

Once upon a time, in the heyday of classic car design, there was a brand called Nash that dared to dream big...literally. Imagine a car where kids could stretch out and sleep in the back while Dad navigated the roads up front. The Nash Rambler (USA 1950-1954) was essentially a rolling bedroom, complete with a panaoramic view through its ample windows. In those carefree days of yore, seatbelts were about as common as a flying car. The idea of strapping in for safety hadn't caught on (despite race drivers wearing them). So there was the family, Dad at the wheel, kids snoozing peacefully in the back, mum reading Womens Weekly, and not a care in the world or a seatbelt in sight.

Fast forward to 2024, and the idea of letting your kids sprawl out in the back of a moving vehicle would definitely earn you a hefty fine and a few demerit points, and a few honks from concerned road users. Seatbelts are non-negotiable, and car designs are all about crumple zones and airbags.

So let us raise a toast to the Nash Rambler, a relic of a bygone era when cars were more than just a way to get from home to Midland Gate. They were a statement, a lifestyle....and sometimes, a very cosy place for a nap.
